About the breed

History

The Pug comes from China, where it was a companion dog and popular at the imperial court; the Dutch East India Company brought it to Europe in the 16th century. In Western Europe the House of Orange in the Netherlands and the House of Stuart made it popular, and in 19th-century Britain Queen Victoria was a great fan.

The American Kennel Club lists it in the Toy Group and recognised it in 1885. The breed’s motto is “Multum in Parvo” — a lot in a little.

Temperament

AKC describes the Pug as charming, mischievous and loving, and it barks infrequently. AKC rates its energy level 3 of 5, its trainability 4 of 5 and its barking level 1 of 5.

AKC notes that it was bred as a companion and is eager to please and generally easy to train; because it is sensitive, AKC advises against harsh methods. It is unhappy if regularly left alone for long periods.

Care

According to AKC, the Pug is happy to spend much of the day on the sofa but is playful and lively, and it recommends daily moderate exercise such as walks or yard play. It takes part in agility, obedience and rally.

The fine, smooth, short and glossy coat is most often fawn or black; it needs minimal grooming but does shed, and AKC recommends weekly brushing. AKC rates its shedding level 4 of 5 and its grooming frequency 2 of 5.

The Pug stands 25–33 cm and weighs 6–8 kg. The life span is given as 13–15 years.
