About the breed

History

The Cocker Spaniel on this page is the American breed: in the United States it is called the Cocker Spaniel, and elsewhere the American Cocker Spaniel. It split from the English Cocker Spaniel during the 20th century, because the US and UK breed standards differed.

It was bred as a flushing gun dog; “cocker” is commonly linked to hunting woodcock in England, and “spaniel” is thought to come from the breed type’s origins in Spain.

The American Kennel Club lists it in the Sporting Group and recognised it in 1878, and its nickname is the Cocker. AKC lists the English Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Field Spaniel and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as related breeds.

Temperament

AKC describes the Cocker Spaniel as gentle, smart and happy. AKC rates its energy level 4 of 5, its trainability 4 of 5 and its barking level 3 of 5.

AKC calls it people-pleasing and sensitive: harsh correction is not productive, and it is motivated by food rewards. It enjoys performance activities and events.

Care

According to AKC, it does not need a lot of exercise to burn off energy, and it enjoys retrieving a toy and going for walks with its people.

The coat needs regular, thorough grooming — missed sessions lead to tangles and mats — and AKC names a metal comb as the key tool. AKC rates its grooming frequency 4 of 5 and its shedding level 3 of 5.

Males stand 37–39 cm and weigh 11–14 kg; females stand 34–37 cm and weigh 9–11 kg. The life span is given as 10–14 years.
