About the breed

History

The Beagle comes from Great Britain, where it was bred as a scent hound for hunting rabbit and hare — a sport known as beagling. The American Kennel Club lists it in the Hound Group and recognised it in 1885.

A Beagle looks like a much smaller foxhound. Its nose also makes it a detection dog for prohibited agricultural imports and food in quarantine.

It was bred to work in packs, and AKC notes that it is happiest with company, human or canine.

Temperament

AKC describes the Beagle as friendly, curious and merry, and the breed likes to be vocal. AKC rates its energy level 4 of 5, its trainability 3 of 5 and its barking level 4 of 5.

For training, AKC recommends treats, patience and positive reinforcement rather than harsh methods.

Care

AKC recommends at least an hour of exercise a day. It also calls the Beagle a known escape artist and recommends a secure fence and walks on a lead, because its scenting instinct makes it follow a trail.

The coat is a smooth, dense double coat that grows heavier in winter; it sheds in spring and moderately all year, and AKC recommends weekly brushing. AKC rates its shedding level 3 of 5 and its grooming frequency 2 of 5.

The breed comes in two size varieties: the smaller stands up to 33 cm and weighs under 9 kg, and the larger stands 33–38 cm and weighs 9–14 kg. The life span is given as 10–15 years.
