About the breed

History

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi comes from Pembrokeshire in Wales and is descended from the Spitz family of dogs. It was developed to herd cattle, and AKC notes that it enjoys having a job. Its name is Welsh: “cor” and “ci” together mean “dwarf dog”, and its nickname is the Pem.

The American Kennel Club lists it in the Herding Group and recognised it in 1934. The Pembroke is one of two Welsh Corgi breeds; the other is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. AKC lists the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Swedish Vallhund, Dachshund, Drever and Teddy Roosevelt Terrier as related breeds.

In Dog Kennel Simulator the breed is simply the Corgi.

Temperament

AKC describes the Pembroke as affectionate, smart and alert, and it likes to be vocal. AKC rates its energy level 4 of 5, its trainability 4 of 5 and its barking level 4 of 5.

AKC notes that a Pembroke can have a mind of its own but is willing and intelligent, and it recommends positive, reward-based training.

Care

AKC recommends moderate daily exercise: a Pembroke is fine on long walks or slow jogs, but its short legs can’t keep up with a bicycle. It takes part in agility, herding, obedience and tracking.

The thick, weatherproof double coat sheds daily, and more in late spring and early summer; AKC recommends a daily comb and brush. AKC rates its shedding level 4 of 5 and its grooming frequency 2 of 5.

The Pembroke stands 25–30 cm; males weigh up to 14 kg and females up to 13 kg. The life span is given as 12–13 years.
