About the breed

History

The Jack Russell Terrier comes from North Devon in England; in the early 19th century the parson John “Jack” Russell bred these dogs for fox hunting, and the breed is named after him. It is closely related to the modern Fox Terrier and is distinct from the Parson Russell Terrier.

The FCI and the UK treat it as a separate breed, while the American Kennel Club does not list it; its closest AKC breeds are the Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier, both in the Terrier Group. AKC recognised the Russell Terrier in 2012 and the Parson Russell Terrier in 1997. For the Russell Terrier, AKC lists the Parson Russell Terrier, Smooth Fox Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier, Rat Terrier and Jagdterrier as related breeds.

Temperament

The ratings and care notes on this page are AKC’s figures for the Russell Terrier, not for the Jack Russell Terrier itself. AKC describes the Russell Terrier as alert, inquisitive and lively, and it likes to be vocal. AKC rates the Russell Terrier’s energy level 5 of 5, its trainability 3 of 5 and its barking level 4 of 5.

AKC notes that the Russell Terrier has kept a strong prey drive and recommends early socialisation.

Care

AKC says the Russell Terrier is not a breed for a couch-potato family and suits families who hike, cycle and take long daily walks.

The coat is mainly white with coloured markings and comes in three types — smooth, broken and rough; AKC recommends weekly brushing and keeping it mostly natural. AKC rates the Russell Terrier’s shedding level 3 of 5 and its grooming frequency 2 of 5.

The Russell Terrier stands 25–30 cm, weighs 4–7 kg and lives 12–14 years; the Parson Russell Terrier stands 33–36 cm, weighs 6–8 kg and lives 13–15 years.
