About the breed
History
The German Shepherd Dog was developed in Germany from 1899 by Max von Stephanitz, starting from traditional German herding dogs; in Britain it is known as the Alsatian. It was created for sheep herding and later took on many kinds of working roles. It gained international recognition after the First World War.
The American Kennel Club lists it in the Herding Group and recognised it in 1908; it is also known as the GSD. AKC lists the Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Dutch Shepherd and Czechoslovakian Vlciak as related breeds.
In Dog Kennel Simulator the breed goes by the shorter name German Shepherd.
