About the breed
History
The American Bulldog is a mastiff-type dog whose ancestors were working bulldogs brought to the British North American colonies. It was bred for farm and ranch work, as a guardian, a stock dog and a catch dog.
The United Kennel Club recognised the breed on 1 January 1999; the American Kennel Club has listed it only in its Foundation Stock Service, since November 2019, so it is not a full AKC breed. Because it is not a full AKC breed, AKC has published no trait ratings for it, and this page gives none. The American Bully, a separate breed, developed from the American Bulldog.
Temperament
There are two types: a heavier “Bully” type, also called Johnson or Classic, and a more athletic type with a longer muzzle. Many modern dogs are a mix of the two, called “hybrids”. The AKC has not published a temperament description for the breed, so this page does not give one.
Care
The American Bulldog stands 52–70 cm at the withers and weighs 27–54 kg. There is no AKC life-span figure for the breed, so this page does not give one.
