About the breed

History

The Siberian Husky comes from the Russian Far East, where the Chukchi people first developed it for sled pulling and companionship; it belongs to the Spitz genetic family. It was brought to Nome, Alaska, during the gold rush, and in the 1925 serum run sled teams carried diphtheria serum to Nome.

The American Kennel Club lists it in the Working Group and recognised it in 1930. It looks similar to the Alaskan Malamute but is smaller. AKC lists the Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed, Yakutian Laika, Chinook and Akita as related breeds.

In Dog Kennel Simulator it’s simply the Husky.

Temperament

AKC describes the Siberian Husky as loyal, mischievous and outgoing, and it barks frequently. AKC rates its energy level 5 of 5, its trainability 3 of 5 and its barking level 5 of 5.

AKC calls it very social and not suited to being left alone all day.

Care

According to AKC, it is active and athletic, needs a lot of exercise and is happiest with a job to do. Because it was bred to run, AKC recommends keeping it on a lead, in harness or in a fenced yard.

AKC calls it a “natural” breed: largely self-cleaning, often needing only a few baths a year, with weekly brushing. It has a thick double coat whose undercoat is shed twice a year, along with erect triangular ears and distinctive markings. AKC rates its shedding level 4 of 5 and its grooming frequency 2 of 5.

Males stand 53–60 cm and weigh 20–27 kg; females stand 51–56 cm and weigh 16–23 kg. The life span is given as 12–14 years.
